photography, digital graphics, and natural history.

Rant #3

Digital Fine Art -

is it an oxymoron?

I recently did a search for digital art on ebay. I got a selection of first time Photoshop users, bad car, cat, dog, and flower photos, the heads of various celebrity’s, placed inexpertly on naked bodies they probably wished they had, and more photos of Lindsay Lohan than I would ever care to see. Although there was some reasonable artwork it was almost always under priced and still wasn’t selling. Admittedly ebay is not my usual goto location for fine artwork (although it is for almost anything else), but come on!

Digital media is now accepted in museums around the world yet the majority of art enthusiasts see original digital prints as a poor cousin of oil painting, stone lithography, serigraphy, or even conventional photography. Some don’t accept it at all. It doesn’t help that the majority of professional digital artists still call it “computer generated art.” The computer doesn’t generate art any more than a paint brush generates an oil painting. (More to come...)
