A Northern Elephant Seal pup, hauled out at San Carlos Beach, Monterey, CA. It is always best to stay well back from a wild marine animal, especially if you have a pet with you. Some diseases can be transmitted from pets to marine mammals and visa versa. Don't block their way to the sea, if they are startled and you are between them and the water, the situation could get dicey.

It had crawled out of the bay and layed down on a picnickers blanket. Although healthy, this animal was taken to prevent further contact with humans. You can see it's rescuers, from the Marine Mammal Center, reflected in it's eye.
